Prelude

What am I supposed to be doing?

1 Mainly, just exploring and tidying up.
2 You can use the mop in the closet to clean any dirty floors you see.
3 The father of the wealthy family at table one would like some wine. You can find it in the Wine Cellar.
4 Once you have visited all six locations (Kitchen, Dining Room, Closet, Restroom, Office, and Wine Cellar) and served the wine, Mrs. Davenport will arrive.

First Course

What do I do now?

1 You need to make some tea for Mrs. Davenport. After you've served her tea, you can get started on her vegetable soup.

How do I make the tea?

1 The tealeaves are in the cupboard in the kitchen.
2 You'll also need to find an empty teacup. Where might you find dirty dishes?
3 Collect the empty teacup from table three.
4 If the kettle isn't boiling yet, you'll have to wait a few rounds.
5 Once you have the teacup and the kettle is boiling, you can make several different kinds of tea. There may be hints as to which varieties will be best received.
6 Read the article in "Culinary Weekly" on Vera Davenport.

How do I make the soup?

1 The soup is already started and is in the pot on the range.
2 The final ingredients are in the fridge.
3 They need to be chopped first. Use the dicing knife in the kitchen.

Goodness me! How do I stop this bleeding?

1 Did you look in that glass cabinet in the kitchen? There's a first aid kit inside.
2 Well, that didn't work. Have you seen any bandaging materials anywhere?
3 You'll have to find a way to conceal your bleeding hand from the diners in the Seating Area.
4 Have you tried washing your hands to see if that gets the blood off?
5 It didn't, but did you notice the rubber glove in the sink?
6 With the glove on, you'll be able to cross the seating area and go into the closet, where you saw the pile of bandages.
7 Once you have a banadage, you can take the glove off and bandage your hand.

How do I finish up the soup?

1 You will need to wash the remaining blood off your hands, if you haven't already done so.
2 Add all the sliced vegetables to the soup.
3 Serve it.

How do I fix the pneumatic tube system?

1 You will have to interact with the tube system a bit and get a good picture of how it works. If you haven't done so already, you might want to load up a game saved before it broke and play around with it.
2 The main tube system controls are in the kitchen, but the hub for the tube center is in the Wine Cellar.
3 The reset lever in the Wine Cellar is a good first step.
4 That seems to have cleared up the tube system jam, but the dial in the Kitchen that controls where food is sent to seems to also have broken. You could also control the tube system from the wine cellar, but the control panel there has no dial or button. You'll have to find these controls and attach them to the wine cellar control panel.

Where do I find a dial?

1 The dial in the kitchen seems to be stuck fast, but maybe that's just because it's broken.
2 Where else in a restaurant would you find a dial? Or maybe, something round that you can set to various numbers?
3 Look at the oven. Notice that it has a knob that can be examined.
4 Take the knob from the oven and attach it to the control panel in the wine cellar.

Where do I find a button?

1 A button is a bit trickier to find than a knob. It might not be where you'd expect.
2 Have you looked at that fancy toilet in the restroom?

How do I operate the tube system from the wine cellar?

1 First you'll have to find makeshift controls. (See previous three hints.)
2 Once you've attached those to the control panel, you'll notice that you can operate the tube system more or less like you could from the kitchen.
3 The only difference is that you now have a knob that can be set from 0 to 550 or Broil, instead of 1 to 5.
4 Setting the knob to "2" no longer sends the carrier to table two, and setting it to "4" does not send the carrier to the kitchen. Why would this have changed?
5 The numbers 1 through 5 were probably spread out along the kitchen dial around its length, just like 0 through 550 (and Broil) are spread around the oven knob.
6 You'll have to figure out which set of numbers on the oven knob corresponds to the old "2" from the kitchen dial.
7 For the impatient, the answer is "450" to "550".

How do I conclude this part of the game?

1 Once you have fixed the tube system and sent the soup to Mrs. Davenport's table, go to table two to see how she likes it.

Main Course

How do I find the lobster?

1 Try looking a few likely hiding places. Is he still in his tank? Is he in the dishwasher?
2 Don't limit your search to just the kitchen. You never know how far he might have gotten.
3 While you're in the dining area, you might as well ask some of the diners there if they've noticed anything unusual.
4 Those two businessmen at table one seem to hear a funny noise. Try to listen, or ask one of the businessmen about the noise.
5 Look up.

How do I get the lobster down?

1 Have you tried just taking him?
2 A couple of ideas may occur to you, but performing most of them will make you look ridiculous in front of all these people. You'll need to clear all of the diners out of the restaurant momentarily in order to get the lobster down.

How do I get the two businessmen to leave?

1 Talk to them for a bit and get a feel for what they're like. Ask them about their line of work and observe their actions.
2 Before long you'll notice that they sometimes leave on their own for several rounds.
3 Each businessmen will occasionally get paged, but only one of them will ever be gone at a time.
4 If you could send one or both of them a page, you could get them both out of the room at once.
5 How might you discover their pager number? Where are such things usually listed?
6 Ask one or both of the businessmen about their cards. They will give you a card with a pager number listed.
7 Either wait until one businessman leaves and page the other, or page them both sequentially when both are present.

How do I get Mrs. Davenport to leave?

1 Mrs. Davenport looks pretty settled in there at the table. The key might not be getting her to leave, so much as distracting her somehow.
2 What are your sources of information about Mrs. Davenport?
3 The issue of Culinary Weekly you have has an article about her, and she herself is a source of information if you talk to her.
4 There are two ways to distract Mrs. Davenport. The first involves her grandchildren, and the second involves the other article in Culinary Weekly.
5 The easiest way is to ask her about her grandchildren, but there is only a narrow window of opportunity in which you can take advantage of the distraction while she digs through her purse.
6 The second way is more complex but gives you a much longer period of time. Collect the empty teacup from the sink and make a cup of valerian root tea. Serve it to Mrs. Davenport. This will make her drowsy and eventually cause her to take a short nap, giving you the distraction you need.

How do I get the old veteran to leave?

1 Talking to him might provide a clue.
2 What do veterans like to talk about?
3 He seems hung up on this girl from Kalamazoo. Now, what does that remind you of?
4 There's a classic big band song called "I've Got A Girl In Kalamazoo," but the band playing in your dining room doesn't seem to know it. Have you asked them about it?
5 The band will need some sheet music to play the song. Old sheet music is definitely the kind of thing you might have hanging around a '40s theme restaurant as a decoration.
6 The sheet music is hanging in the restroom, but it's out of your reach. What tools from your environment can you use to get it down?
7 Bring the chair from the office into the restroom and stand on it, or knock the sheet music down with the mop.
8 Give the sheet music to the band. They will play the song, bringing up old memories for the veteran and causing him to leave. He won't return.

Is there any other way to get diners to leave?

1 There is one bonus way to make anyone leave for about twenty rounds. Something that happened in the very first part of the game provided a clue.
2 It involves the wine.
3 If you spill wine on anybody but Mrs. Davenport, they will go into the restroom for a while to clean off their shirt, giving you the distraction you need.
4 The wineglass is in the sink with the other dirty dishes.

Once everyone is gone, how do I get the lobster down?

1 Depending on which methods you used to clear out the dining room, you may only have a few rounds to act.
2 The lobster is huddled towards the center of the chandelier. He would be closer and in a more precarious condition if you could somehow lure him out onto one of the arms.
3 Before the lobster escaped, was there anything he seemed interested in?
4 Show the fingertip or a fish to the lobster, and he will edge farther out.
5 The losbter is closer now, but still not close enough to grab, even if you stand on table one.
6 There are two ways to get the lobster down from here, both involving knocking the lobster off his perch somehow.
7 Do you have any sort of projectile weapon? A gun? Anything that shoots?
8 Use the fire extinguisher from the kitchen to shoot the lobster down.
9 Alternatively, climb up on table one and hit the chandelier with the mop.

I've gotten the lobster down. Now what?

1 Depending on the state of the pneumatic tube system when you knocked the lobster down, he might be in one of several places.
2 If the lobster crawled loose into the system, pressing the button in the kitchen might force him back out.
3 If the lobster fell into an open tube carrier, he's probably still inside.
4 Once you've found the lobster or think you know where he is, take him or examine his surroundings.

I'm too beat up to move. How do I catch the lobster now?

1 Observe the lobster's behavior as you try various things.
2 The lobster seems curious of you, but gets spooked if you move around.
3 Wait until the lobster has crawled all the way up to you, and then grab him.

How do I stop the fire?

1 Whatever you do, you'll have to get the lobster out of your hands first. There are a couple of likely spots.
2 Is that fire extinguisher handy?
3 If you've already used up the fire extinguisher, you'll have to think of something else. Examine the fire and your surroundings.
4 Break either of the tanks above the stove, and the water will rush out and extinguish the fire.

How do I finish the game?

1 Put the lobster in the pot, if you haven't done so already and if he still needs it.
2 Serve him. Voila!
